Minister of Culture and Information Maja Gojkovic said on Sept. 16 that there were around 2,400 media outlets in Serbia, which, she said, guaranteed "a high variety of media content, owing to which each citizen can freely choose what kind of information they want."
At the opening of an eighth regional conference on trends in telecommunications and the media called, Digital 2021, she said that fast technological development and the presence of large telecommunications systems "have contributed to a high level of media plurality in the region and in Serbia."
"The reign of social networks over traditional media outlets has led to an increased number of false news and disinformation. Many users of social networks are unaware that they themselves are sources of information, hence they do not respect professional media standards nor ethics, nor are there any mechanisms of accountability for them," the minister was quoted a saying by her office.
She added that the ministry that she helmed "has taken steps" to improve the area of information. "By this I above all mean correcting existing media laws, as well as incentivizing and affirming media literacy in association with UNESCO," she said.
