Serbian Minister of European Integration Jadranka Joksimovic is attending a round table titled The European Union's Next Enlargement: Prospects and Pitfalls, in Madrid on Nov. 19. The event organizers are the Elcano Royal Institute, Bled Strategic Forum and the Embassy of Slovenia in Spain.

According to a press release from the Ministry of European Integration, the aim of the meeting is to strategically discuss the EU enlargement process, the reasons for its slowdown due to both the internal contradictions in the Union itself and to the insufficiently fast solving of the remaining political problems and security issues in the Western Balkans, after which the whole region could focus on speeding up the necessary reform processes.

Senior officials of Montenegro and North Macedonia will take part in the meeting, as will officials of Spain and Slovenia, the latter being the current holder of the EU rotating presidency.

Opening speeches will be given by Maciej Popowski, acting director-general at the Directorate-General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations, and Gabriel Escobar, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state and special envoy for the Western Balkans.

At the last panel devoted to the EU's doubts regarding the enlargement policy, renowned representatives of the European academic community and think tanks will speak.
