Without a serious lustration of Serbia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and security agencies there is no hope of the police force ever operating properly, Spasoje Vulevic, the former commander of the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit, said on Oct. 29.

“This must be done for us to move forward. I’m certain we have the human resources to do it,” Vulevic said in an interview for the Vreme weekly.

According to him, without an organized, systemic purge of corrupt public servants, “a mix of organized crime, security services, political elements and business [power holders]” will continue to do everything they can to retain their positions.

The retired colonel also confirmed that a sonic weapon was indeed used against peaceful protestors during the March 15, 2025 massive anti-regime rally at Belgrade’s Slavija square.

“Everything was peaceful until that famous sound canon, acoustic weapon [was deployed]. It is monstrous that someone pressed that button during a minute of silence. Anyone who watches the videos from multiple angles as well as the people who were present can see that an acoustic weapon was used. My children were there, my neighbors, my friends,” Vulevic stressed.
