Ministry of Health State Secretary Predrag Sazdanovic said on Feb. 3 that the number of new coronavirus cases in the past several days "is high as expected" and that many people had been hospitalized with the disease.

"The number of those who need to be hospitalized is enormous. Hospital capacities are between 70 and 90 percent full, there are 750 patients hospitalized in Batajnica, which is at near full capacity," Sazdanovic told Serbian state TV.

He stressed that "the vaccine protects against complicated cases" and that in the past several waves of the epidemic between 20 and 22 percent of infected persons were placed in intensive care units, but that the number of hospitalizations stemmed from a far greater number of infected than in previous waves.

"The situation is very complicated and will definitely be that way throughout all of February. We expect a slight decrease at the end of February," Sazdanovic said.
