Serbia's Ambassador to the Ukraine Aleksandar Jovanovic said on Feb. 28 that his embassy remains in contact with the Serbian truckers trapped in the Ukraine and is doing everything possible to help them, in coordination with the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"We've had a problem at Ukrainian border crossings for four-five days now. In Djakovo, we have 44 truckers at the border and another 30 trucks some five-six kilometers outside Djakovo," Jovanovic told Pink TV, adding that there are other such cases elsewhere in the country.
According to information the embassy in Kiev has gathered, the trapped drivers still have food and water but are struggling with the severe shortage in fuel: even where there is some available, drivers can only buy up to 20 liters.
In a second interview, the ambassador told the Feb. 28 edition of the Vecernje Novosti daily that prior to the current armed conflict about 300 Serbs were staying in the Ukraine. Now, all but a few dozen have fled the country.
Ambassador Jovanovic explained that he and another three embassy employees remain stationed in Kiev, baking their own bread and monitoring the news and the situation on the ground. "We're used to the sounds, the detonations -- we've been through it all already when Serbia was bombed in 1999," Jovanovic explained.
