The director of the German Organization for International Cooperation (GIZ) in Serbia, Daniela Funke, and her peer at the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Serbia, Richard Kohli, signed a partnership agreement to step up support to migration management in Serbia, says a March 14 release.

“Having recognized a need to improve coordination in the area of migration an development at the country level, with special emphasis on local development, support will be intensified through the existing global programs run by the GIZ, Migration for Development, Migration and the diaspora and the Swiss-Serbian Migration Partnership and other programs,” says the release.

Switzerland and Germany want to underline again how important coordination and cooperation in the area of migration and development are. Kohli said that there’s room for improvement, especially in the areas of national and local migration policies, the employment of returnees and migrants, the involvement of the Diaspora in national development, and also in building the capacity of institutions to address the issue of migration.

Funke said that they had joined forces to provide more effective and extensive services on the local level, opening more opportunities for employment and economic prosperity for the local population and returnees.
