The latest annual report by the Council of Europe (CoE) Committee of Ministers on the execution of judgments by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) showed that in 2021 the number of new verdicts rose 40 percent compared to the previous year, from 983 to 1,379, and that Serbia was fifth on the list of new cases.

Russia topped the list with 267 new cases, followed by Ukraine (196), Turkey (106), Romania (104) and Serbia (69). The Committee of Ministers reported a considerable jump in the number of cases against Serbia compared to 16 filed in 2020, but only one of the new cases was “a leading case,” while the others were repetitive.

The number of pending cases in Serbia, which are those where the execution process is ongoing, was 76 last year. It’s a considerable increase compared to 33 pending cases in 2020, and is mostly due to a higher number of repetitive cases (64 compared to 21 in 2020). The number of pending leading cases was 12 – the same as in 2020.
