Darko Saric, accused for international cocaine smuggling, was arrested in Belgrade on April 14 in an international operation, coordinated by EUROPOL and EUROJUST, in which the police forces of Serbia and Croatia took part. Members of several organized criminal groups were also arrested, the Interior Ministry has stated.
According to the statement, the arrested are five members of an organized criminal group that operated in Serbia, Europe and South America. They are accused of organizing to commit crime, murder, illegal production and trafficking of narcotics, illegal production, possession and trafficking of weapons and explosive materials, causing danger to the general public and abuse of official position.
The suspects are being kept in police custody for up to 48 hours and they are to be brought before the Prosecution for Organized Crime with criminal charges. Saric was accused earlier for international cocaine smuggling and money laundering, for which he was sentenced to 15 years in prison. However, he has been in house arrest since the end of 2021.
The media have reported that the arrests were in connection with the organizing of murders in Serbia and in Montenegro, and with the murder of two members of the Skaljari crime clan in the Greek island of Corfu.
