May 4 marks the 28th anniversary of Beta News Agency, an independent wire service founded by a group of Belgrade journalists which began broadcasting in 1994.

BETA’s founders are Ljubica Markovic, Julija Bogojeva, Radomir Diklic and Dusan Reljic, as well as the late Aleksandar Nenadovic, Stevan Niksic, Djordje Zorkic, Dusan Simic and Dragan Janjic.

The agency began as a regional provider of news from Serbia – which, along with Montenegro, comprised the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia at the time – as well as the region and several international metropolises. Today, BETA offers up-to-the-minute multimedia news content that adheres to the highest professional, ethical, journalistic and legal standards.

In 2003, BETA launched Radio Sto Plus in Novi Pazar, broadcasting to the Sandzak region.

Particularly concerned for the environment, the agency developed the Zelena Srbija (Green Serbia) service to cover environmental news both local and international. BETA also regularly follows Euractiv Serbia for news on Euro-integration policies and issues. As of 2004, Beta News Agency has held the annual BETA Photograph of the Year competition for the best media photo taken in South-Eastern Europe.
