Vucic: EU Negotiation Framework Does Not Include Mutual Recognition with Kosovo

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated on June 14 that the negotiation framework with the EU officially included “full normalization” of relations between Belgrade and Pristina, but not the mutual recognition.

He added that he expected “fierce” criticism of Serbia in the forthcoming period, regarding Kosovo and the “non-imposing of restrictive measures” against Russia. To the question about what he expected from the meeting of EU and Western Balkans’ leaders in Brussels on June 23, Vucic responded that it would be “interesting” at the Union’s headquarters.

He said Euro-skepticism was increasing by the day, but that Serbia remained on its European path. “Can we make do without Europe and their investments? Are we emotionally filled with joy because of their statements about Kosovo and pressure over our foreign policy?” Vucic stated, adding: “We must maintain policy in keeping with our fundamental, real interests.”

He said that he was particularly worried about winter because of the rising price of oil, the looming electricity shortage and uncertainty around gas.

“We have a fair approach to both western and eastern partners. We say what we mean to everyone. And every day analysts say that we will no longer be able to sit on both chairs. People, you haven’t understood when we said 100 times – we have our own policy. And we say that bravely to everyone,” Vucic stated.
