Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said during a July 29 visit to Belgrade that Spain supported Serbia’s accession to the European Union (EU).

Following a meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and a plenary conference of Serbian and Spanish delegations, the Spanish prime minister said that Serbia could rely on Spain as a friend to help it join the Union. “Serbia, which has been a candidate country since 2002, is staying on its path. Rest assured that Spain will always be by your side. You will have our support in becoming a full member of the Union,”  Sanchez said.

Spain’s head of government explained that what connected Serbia and Spain was a need to respect international law, territorial integrity and sovereignty. “We support Serbia when it comes to Kosovo. Serbia has been, and always will be by Serbia’s side in defending these principles,” the prime minister said, adding that Belgrade would host a business conference in October of Serbian and Spanish firms, and that the two governments were working on a bilateral economic agreement.

President Vucic described Spain as Serbia’s true friend, and one of its biggest in the world. After a meeting with Sanchez on July 30, Serbian Speaker Ivica Dacic said that to join the EU was Serbia’s strategic plan.
