A liturgy at which Serbian Orthodox Church Patriarch Porfirije was installed was held at the Patriarchate of Pec Monastery on Oct. 14. For the Serbian Orthodox Church, installation at the Patriarchate of Pec holds historical and symbolic importance which demonstrates church continuity.
Numerous citizens observed the ceremony inside and outside the church. Among the attendees were representatives of the Serb List party, jurist Milan Antonijevic and others.
Besides Serbian Orthodox Church bishops, the liturgy was also attended by bishops of the Macedonian Orthodox Church which the Serbian Church has granted autocephaly after a multiannual dispute. A representative of the Russian Orthodox Church was at the event, too.
The Kosovo authorities did not allow the director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Petar Petkovic, to attend the installation.
Patriarch Porfirije was installed at the Cathedral Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Belgrade in early 2021, immediately after his election, but it is customary for an installation to be held at the Patriarchate of Pec, the ancient seat of church leaders, as well.
The installation comes at a time when Belgrade is stressing its exposure to great pressure from the West to change its position on Kosovo.
