Secretary General of the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) Majlinda Bregu said on Oct. 19 that the upcoming conference of the Berlin Process might bring about importance change to the average citizen in the Western Balkans, if politicians came to an agreement.

In an interview for BETA, Bregu said that at-risk-of-poverty rates were growing in the region, underlining that it’s precisely in a crisis that regional cooperation mattered most. Bregu quoted forecasts as saying that the region’s inflation rate might grow to 27.8 percent, with consumer prices going up to 12.8 percent in 2022.

Having warned that rising inflation hit the poor excessively, Bregu expressed fears that “since the people in the Western Balkans usually spend more than 50 percent of their budgets on food, beverages, electricity, gas and other fuels, many households are exposed to poverty, as the region’s at-risk-of-poverty rates are already going up.“
