Serbia will not abandon its demand for the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities in Kosovo but does hope this will be achieved through political rather than military means, Defense Minister Milos Vucevic said on Dec. 15.
“Serbia needs its economy and defenses strengthened. We do not want conflict but no one doubts that Serbia will protect its citizens. . . [A]nother [operation] ‘Storm’ will not be happening,” Vucevic told Happy TV, referencing the 1995 forced exodus of Serbs from Croatia. “The Army is equipped and armed, but we are ardently hoping that [such] political issues will be resolved via politics rather than the military,” the minister explained.
According to him, the Community of Serb Municipalities – which, Vucevic recalled, was guaranteed by the EU – would offer Kosovo Serbs “a kind of autonomy” and serve as a guarantee “that the Serb community can truly make a life in the territory.”
The defense minister added that the Army of Serbia has maintained an increased level of combat readiness on orders of President Aleksandar Vucic ever since drones from Kosovo attempted to scout military structures in Serbia proper on Nov. 2.
