President of the Serbian Pediatric Association Georgios Konstantinidis cautioned on Dec. 26 that as measles vaccination rates dropped, Serbia had a realistic chance of seeing a measles outbreak.

The pediatrician underlined in an interview with the state broadcaster RTS that in principle there were no side effects from measles vaccination.

Dr Konstantinidis said that particularly concerning was a drop in the use of MMR vaccine, protecting against measles, mumps and rubella – in 2021 the national MMR vaccination rate was 75 percent, and “a mere 24 percent in one Serbian city.”

Konstantinidis said that entire society should unite in a strong campaign to restore confidence in science and medical profession.

The doctor also warned that the media, “instead of being a source of accurate information, became one of misinformation,” and that “measles vaccination is the representative sample of the media policy.”
