According to data of the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration, more than 119,000 refugees and asylum seekers had passed through reception and asylum centers in Serbia in 2022, Belgrade Center for Human Rights representative Ana Trifunovic said on Feb. 28.

At the presentation of a report titled “The Right to Asylum in Serbia 2022,” Trifunovic said that this number doubled against 2021. “The largest number of refugees is from Afghanistan and Syria,” Trifunovic said, adding that the number of those accommodated in reception and asylum centers “ranged from 4,000 to 8,000.”

According to Trifunovic, 4,181 people expressed intention to seek asylum in Serbia in 2022, of whom 320 officially applied for asylum and 30 were granted asylum. She added that in 2021, 14 asylums were granted and 238 in 2008.

In 2022, 1,115 Ukrainian nationals were granted temporary protection in Serbia, while 4,000 foreign nationals were denied entry to Serbia at airports.
