According to the March 9 edition of the Vecernje Novosti daily, President of Serbia and leader of the Serbian Progressive Party Aleksandar Vucic has decided to move ahead with the formation of the People’s Movement for the State, a new political organization which will offer “a third path” for the country.
The purpose of the movement, the paper writes, will be to rally individuals who – with the global crash in Ukraine at its height – are “neither pro-Eastern nor pro-Western, but rather primarily focused on Serbia’s best interests.”
“The organization is supposed to gather nationally- and civically-oriented individuals, parties and movements for the mission of quelling the ‘domestic Cold War,’ which has been raging since the beginning of Russia’s operation in Ukraine and has been eagerly fanned by foreign agencies, each with its own agenda,” the daily claims, adding that potential members could be easily found among the Progressives’ coalition partners from the last election.
The Vecernje Novosti further maintained that Vucic “wants to clean up” his party’s ranks, allowing it to join the movement “free of those who do not share the stance of Serbia’s leadership that [the country] should remain neutral amid the conflict of great powers and focus on itself and its own interests instead.”
