On April 20, the Nis doctors who spent months working during their weekends off without compensation to eliminate surgery waiting lists have asked the state to buy them new equipment rather than present them with medals, as has been announced.
Dragan Milic, the director of cardiovascular surgery at the Nis University Clinical Centre, explained that other medical institutions in Serbia already have such equipment and that he and his colleagues are only asking to receive the same – along with additional staff.
“We’ve donated 24 work days to our patients and have saved many lives which would have been lost waiting on surgery. While we performed 287 operations in those 24 days, it would have been worth it even if only a single life had been saved, because one cannot put a price tag on human life,” Milic said.
The surgeon emphasized that saving lives is a doctor’s job and that he and his colleagues do not need to be rewarded with medals – they need more doctors and nurses on staff.
