All members of the Serbian Progressive Party Presidency and Steering Committee want incumbent leader Aleksandar Vucic to remain at the party helm and not to step down, a Progressives’ official and the Serbian construction, transportation and infrastructure minister, Goran Vesic, said on May 16.

“If Vucic sticks to his decision (to step down in late May), we will elect the person he nominates for party leader. But even in that case, Vucic will not leave the Serbian Progressive Party, because he is the one who has made it great and strong,” Vesic told TV Prva.

Speaking about the recent protests against violence, Vesic said that the opposition had initiated the rallies not because they wanted snap elections, but because they wanted to “replace someone while ditching direct elections.”

“The Progressives have never feared elections. But when the Serbian president and the party leader said: 'You want early elections? You will have them,' we could hear the opposition voicing their disapproval in unison, because they know they will be defeated,” Vesic stressed.
