The recent mass shooting in Belgrade elementary school Vladislav Ribnikar, in which nine children and a school guard were killed, revealed that something “is not so good” in the system in Serbia, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Belgrade Ladislav Nemet said on May 16.
In an interview with newspaper Balkan Magazin, Nemet said that he, as a member of the National Education Council, was aware of the disciplinary issues at schools, adding he believed that a more serious approach to addressing such issues systemically had to be applied.
“All must show more respect for teachers, the system itself and the importance of education. Parents should be spending more time with their children. It is not enough to provide them with all the necessary material things, if they do not have love,” Nemet stressed.
He added that the school tragedy also showed that the boy, the shooter, had not felt loved enough.
“Love can overcome many things. The educational system should not only be educating, but it should also make sure that those little souls grow up to become great and honest people, members of the society. I think that this tragedy should drive more serious deliberations of what is not so good,” Nemet noted.
