Gabriel Escobar
On May 21 U.S. special envoy for the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar called a deal on the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina a huge achievement and an historic breakthrough in the development of Serbia-Kosovo relations.
In an interview with the Montenegrin Mina news agency, Escobar said he saw no reason why the remaining issues could not be worked out by the end of summer. On Serbia's part, there are certain elements that must be met when it comes to recognizing registration markings for automobiles, IDs and some other things. And Kosovo is expected to form the Community of Serb Municipalities. Sorry, this is not an expectation. It's an obligation, Escobar said.
He said the U.S. wanted these processes to unfold as quickly as possible. He reminded that the agreement was legally binding and that the question now was how to implement it fully.
Escobar also warned that there was a danger of Russian interference with parliamentary elections in Montenegro on June 11, adding that this danger had always existed even in elections in the U.S. Rest assured that they will try to leverage every difference and use every established method -- bots and disinformation in attempts to divert Montenegro from its European path. That is why I'm concerned over elections not just in Montenegro, but the region, Escobar said.
