Addressing the UN Security Council meeting in New York on Oct. 23, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani said that “Serbia is trying to switch the place of the aggressor with that of the victim of the aggression.”

Her speech at the UN Security Council meeting discussing the latest biannual report on the work of UNMIK, Osmani opened by giving a count of the consequences of the armed conflict in Kosovo in 1998/99, but stressed that Kosovo was committed “to walk forward, not backwards.”

Osmani in particular recalled, what she called, “the attack by a Serbia-backed paramilitary and terrorist group in Banjska, near Zvecan” on Sept. 24. “That day, the Republic of Kosovo was a target of an act of aggression by Serbia, through terrorist and paramilitary groups,” Osmani said.

She called for “substantial security guarantees for Kosovo within the Euro-Atlantic security framework.”

“Moreover, increase security around Kosovo’s border with Serbia and adopt clear measures against Serbia’s leadership as deterrence,” Osmani said. She added that “a resolute message would underscore a commitment to safeguarding peace and security in the entire region, but also in the entire European continent. It would showcase that the democratic world does not stay idle in the face of autocratic regimes,” Osmani stressed.
