Last year, 94 attacks on LGBT+ people were reported in Serbia, the highest number in six years and 13 percent more than in 2021, presenters of a report on transphobia and homophobia in Serbia said on Nov. 6.
Ana Petrovic of the For the Record association, which did the survey, said 21 individuals had been hurt in the attacks, most during Europride in Belgrade in September 2022, when six people sustained major injuries.
"The highest number of attacks in the course of the year happened in Belgrade," Petrovic said, adding that "horrific cases of institutional violence" had been recorded in southern Serbia.
The report shows that LGBT+ people do not trust the police or prosecutors, and most often go to the association when their safety is threatened rather than institutions.
Serbian ombudsman Zoran Pasalic attended the presentation and said LGBT+ people's rights were "a topic that must be in focus."
