Non-governmental organization Women’s Support Center on Nov. 24 said that 212 incidents of physical violence and 72 sexual assaults against women had been registered in Vojvodina since the beginning of this year, adding that men accounted for 96 percent of the perpetrators.
In a statement released on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, marked on Nov. 25, the NGO said that 333 incidents of psychological violence, 97 economic abuses, and 15 incidents of digital violence were also reported in this period.
According to the Center’s data, in 98 percent of incidents, the victims know the perpetrator, and in most cases live with them.
Center’s Director Biljana Stepanov said that although the Istanbul Convention required provision of specialist support services to the victims of violence, such services in Serbia had not been fully aligned with international standards nor were fully accessible.
