The recent elections in Serbia will be on the agenda of the European Parliament’s (EP) plenary session in Strasbourg on Jan. 17. The EP will hold a debate on “situation in Serbia following elections,” according to the EP website.

“Following our repeated requests, we finally succeeded - on Wednesday, (European) Parliament will debate dire situation in Serbia after elections marred by serious fraud. Despite initial resistance from the EPP (European People’s Party). We stand with Serbs who demand justice, democracy and a European future,” the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) Group has written on their X account.

Explaining the demand of the second most powerful group in the EP, its MEP Andreas Schieder, a member of the EP observation delegation at the recent early elections in Serbia, said that the vote was marked by “irregularities, like phantom voters, pressure on voters, as well as decisive involvement of the President and the ruling party systemic advantage, which undermined the electoral process.” He added that “when international election observers, like from the EP, and like myself also, raised this issue, the Government of Serbia and the President himself attacked these international observers. Therefore, I am happy that the majority of the groups in the EP has now agreed to have a debate during this plenary and I am also looking forward that we will have a resolution which we also support as S&D Group,” Schieder said in a video posted on S&D Group’s X account.

A vote on a resolution on elections in Serbia will not take place this week, but at a plenary session in February, according to the EP website.
