The site of the Army General Staff building in downtown Belgrade, destroyed in the 1999 NATO air strike, will be converted into a multi-use world-class edifice, the former US diplomat and the special envoy of former US President Donald Trump, Richard Grenell, has said.
Asked about the plan of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner to “revitalize” the General Staff building, Grenell said that its central part would be a memorial “as remembrance of its history.”
The General Staff building was destroyed in the 1999 NATO bombing and has never been renovated.
According to earlier media reports, Jared Kushner’s company is planning to build a luxury hotel, office space and more than 1,500 apartments on the site.
Many in Serbia have voice their opposition following initial reports that the site will be given away for free and without a proper tendering procedure, but also for the fact that the development project has been awarded to a company from the US which the local public perceives as the main advocator of the air strikes on the country in 1999.
