The appointment of Richard Grenell as U.S. special envoy, that is, U.S. President Donald Trump's new point person in Serbia-Kosovo peace negotiations, was a surprise, given the recent appointment of Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Matthew Palmer with responsibility for the Western Balkans, said Milan Misic a former Washington correspondent for the Politika newspaper.
"Wheras Palmer is only a mid-range diplomat, Grenell, whom the U.S. administration has kept in his position as U.S. ambassador to Germany, is very close to President Trump (mentioned among other nominees for the posts of national security advisor and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations), and could be far more efficient in realizing the American vision of a solution to the greatest problem in the Balkans," the journalist said to BETA.
Judging by Grenell's behavior in Berlin, where he shows little regard for diplomatic norms and protocols, Misic believes that he will not handle the Kosovo issue with gloves either, in his contacts with representatives of Belgrade, Pristina and the European Union.
