The NIN weekly reported in its Oct. 11 issue that a person alleged to have provided the press with information implicating Branko Stefanovic, father of Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic, in arms trafficking, had been detained.

The person in question is an IT expert from the Krusic factory, suspected by the prosecutor's office of revealing trade secrets.

Borko Stefanovic, deputy president of the Party of Freedom and Justice, asked on Oct. 12 for the immediate release of the detainee.

Stefanovic said the persecution and apprehension of whistleblowers in Serbia was nothing new, and that the arrest of the man who blew the whistle on the involvement of Minister Stefanovic's father in gun running and stealing from Krusik was just more of the same.

The Alliance for Serbia denounced the "attempt to cover up the arms trafficking scandal" and voiced support late on Oct. 13 for a protest calling for the whistleblower's release.

The media and non-governmental organizations have also condemned the whistleblower's incarceration.
