Serbia’s citizens are unhappy with the ongoing brain drain and disappointed with the government’s negligence of this problem, but they back their children in the intention to leave Serbia, according to a report published by research and publishing center Demostat on Feb. 18, containing the results of the conducted surveys.
As many as 29 percent of young people have a strong desire to leave Serbia, while 46 percent show the intention to go abroad, according to the results of study Youth in Southeast Europe 2018/2019, compiled by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and earlier analyzed by Demostat.
“There exist surveys conducted by the Serbian Statistical Office showing that a majority of citizens support their children in going abroad, which is not a surprising figure, but on the other hand, they do not back other young people to leave, that is, they are concerned with the trend,” according to sociologist Milica Veskovic Andjelkovic from the Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy.
She said that older people were more concerned with “the government population policies – failing to do anything through its institutions to maintain contact with those who have left the country, so there is no cooperation with the Diaspora or economic exchange.”
