One in three households in Serbia is not connected to the sewer network, the Nova Ekonomija magazine has reported.

According to Serbian Statistical Office data, the percentage of households connected to the sewer network went up four percentage points between 2014 and 2018, from 59 percent in 2014 to 63 percent in 2018.

Last year 1,528,161 households were connected to the network, meaning that 63,779 households were connected to the system in the aforementioned five-year period.

In the Belgrade Region, practically just a few hundred households were newly connected to the sewer network in 2014, 2015 and 2016, whereas in 2018 more than 3,000 households were attached to the system, the magazine added.

In the Vojvodina Region, the number of companies connected to the network increased by nearly 20,000 - from 326,168 in 2014 to 345,022 in 2018.

In the Sumadija and Western Serbia regions, 385,637 households were connected to the sewer network in 2018, meaning there was an increase of more than 24,000 households relative to 2014.

Noticeable growth, around 20 percent, was registered in the Central Banat Area (with Zrenjanin as the biggest city) and in the Pcinja Area, specifically in the city of Vranje the most - 2,425 connections in five years, whereby the number in 2018 was 16,289 households connected to the sewer network.
