Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told the U.N. General Assembly in the evening on Sept. 23, that Belgrade believes only a dialogue can bring a solution for Kosovo, but that Serbia will never agree to humiliation.

As this is the first time a U.N. General Assembly is meeting online, Vucic gave his speech via video link, saying that the starting point for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue cannot be “humiliating and unacceptable” for Serbia, which Kosovo’s independence is for his country.

“We believe that a long and difficult dialogue could lead to a solution, but rest assured that Serbia will never agree to humiliation. Anything that is not a compromise which has both sides either equally satisfied or dissatisfied, is unacceptable to us,” Vucic said.

The first step forward, he said, was the renewal of talks between Belgrade and Pristina under the auspices of the EU, after 20 months, adding that he sees the recent signing of the White House Agreement to normalize economic relations between Serbia and Kosovo, as another very important step.

“I’m using this opportunity to emphasize and praise the constructive and very important role that U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, which is very dedicated to finding a lasting and sustainable solution for this important question, has played in reaching the agreement,” Serbia’s president said, adding that the EU membership remains the priority of his country’s foreign policy, which, however, does not exclude closer cooperation with other states.
