The National Assembly of Serbia reconvened for its fall session on Oct. 24, launching the sitting with a discussion of 186 amendments to the proposed budget for 2024. Following each argument presented – and regardless of context – Parliament Speaker Vladimir Orlic took the opportunity to inform the assembly that Dragan Djilas, the leader of the oppositional Freedom and Justice Party, “stole EUR619 million.”

In response to a complaint by opposition MPs that the Rules of Procedure were violated when the sitting began 20 minutes late and lasted until two hours past midnight, Orlic said this was caused by pressure to finish before the upcoming elections and by the fact that “Djilas stole EUR619 million” – the latter referring to the income generated by Djilas’s businesses from 2002 to 2014, when he held various public offices.

Parliament’s agenda includes 60 draft laws for the current sitting, which, announcements say, must conclude by the end of the week so that the assembly can be dissolved and a snap election can be called.
