Responding to a diplomatic dispute between Serbia and Montenegro, the European Commission pointed out on Nov. 29 that neighborly relations were important on the road to membership in the European Union.

EC spokeswoman Ana Pisonero told reporters in Brussels that neighborly relations were the cornerstone of the enlargement process and stabilization and association, Radio Free Europe reported. Montenegro and Serbia are making solid progress toward the EU, she added.

On Nov. 28, Montenegro declared Serbian Ambassador to Podgorica Vladimir Bozovic a persona non grata and asked him to leave the country within 72 hours. The Serbian Foreign Ministry countered with an announcement that Montenegrin Ambassador to Belgrade Tarzan Milosevic was a persona non grata, and gave him 72 hours to leave the country.

Montenegrin premier designate Zdravko Krivokapic said on Nov. 29 that he regretted the two states' decisions to remove each other's ambassadors, saying that such actions were not in the spirit of the European road and good regional cooperation between friendly states.

He said that not even in its final days did the outgoing Montenegrin regime have any qualms about polarizing society and deepening divisions, pledging that the new government would work on improving relations with Serbia.
