Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated on May 10 that the situation in the Western Balkans is one of the most important topics that will be discussed at the May 10 Foreign Affairs Council meeting.

“We want to have an overview of the situation and to see how we can engage more in the region, stressing the importance that the Western Balkans have for the EU and looking how we can offer a better, stronger European perspective to the region,” Borrell said ahead of the meeting.

As previously announced, Borrell will present the heads of the EU diplomacy with a “non-paper” document which says that “the clear goal of the Western Balkans is full membership in the EU, and any suggestion for taking different path presents a distraction with bad consequences for strong work that must be done to achieve the vision of a united, strong and advanced Europe.”

The EU foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels on May 10 to hold a strategic discussion on a stronger political engagement of the EU with its partners in the Western Balkans, as well as “joining in common potentials, [and] partner action in facing global challenges.”
