A member of the Serbian government's Covid-19 Crisis Headquarters, Dr Predrag Kon said on Aug. 2 that another lockdown over the latest increase in the number of coronavirus infections was hardly an option, but if the number reached four figures on a daily basis, public gatherings would be restricted.

The epidemiologist said in an interview with the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS) that "some hospitals test for the presence of the Covid-19 delta variant, and will continue to do so," adding that the most infectious strain of the virus is transmitted "at the same speed" as the chickenpox virus, one of the most contagious diseases.

Speaking about the size of the immunized population in Serbia, Dr Kon said that 49.7 percent of adults received the first doze, and that by now the figure should be over 50 percent.

"It is important to know that the vaccine has been approved for children over 12 years of age. It is equally important to know that children will be back to their school communities soon. My personal opinion is that it is necessary to insist that the communities be protected. How will those who don't want to be vaccinated work is a matter that will be certainly discussed," Kon said.
