24 people died from the consequences of the coronavirus infection in Serbia in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of fatalities to 7,445, it was announced on Sept. 8.

According to figures of Serbia's Institute for Public Health, 21,757 people were tested in that period and the presence of the virus was confirmed in 5,633 cases. There are 1,908 covid patients currently being treated in hospitals, 121 of them on ventilators.

Since the start of the epidemic in Serbia, 5,159,888 people have been tested and 794,528 were positive for the virus.

A retired professor of the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade, Slobodan Marinkovic, assessed that the new wave of the coronavirus would be "horrific" because a huge number of people have not been vaccinated. "Without 80 percent of vaccinated people, with the current delta strain, the epidemic will last for years," he told the Nova newspaper, adding that the people bore responsibility for the "epidemiological disaster" which is only just beginning, because they refuse to take the vaccine, without which there will be no end to the epidemic.
