Nikola Selakovic, Serbia’s minister of foreign affairs, has said that his Vatican counterpart, Paul Richard Gallagher, will be visiting Belgrade on Nov. 22.

Selakovic told the Oct. 27 edition of the Vecernje Novosti daily that he had recently spoken with Archbishop Gallagher in the Vatican and added that Gallagher’s upcoming visit is of great importance.

“[The Vatican]’s principled stance of not recognizing Kosovo’s separatism as statehood, and their support to Serbia, means a lot,” Selakovic said.

Asked whether the Pope would visit Serbia anytime soon, the minister responded that the Holy See determined its leader’s schedule for foreign visits based on its communication with local dominant Christian communities.

“In other words, the actualization of the Pope’s visit to Serbia is also closely tied to the opinion of the Serbian Orthodox Church,” Selakovic explained, adding his belief that “the two Churches will make contact and discuss the matter.”
