Professor Aleksandra Knezevic, teaching at the Microbiology and Immunology Institute of the School of Medicine in Belgrade, said on Nov. 8 that the 30 samples analysed over the last two weeks didn't contain the new coronavirus strain, Delta Plus, but rather confirmed complete domination of the Delta variant.
"Having in mind the high number of infections, we can expect the new strain to be registered in Serbia ," Knezevic said in an interview with the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS).
The Delta Plus variant has been confirmed in more than 40 states, and has arrived in Croatia, too, a few days ago. Sharing findings about the strain, Dr Knezevic said it was identified in India, in June 2021, and that it had been monitored since.
"The variant has occurred at a higher rate lately, and reports say that it might be spreading quicker compared to the Delta strain. It is unclear if Delta Plus contributes to more severe symptoms, whether it affects therapy or the efficiency of a vaccine. The assumption is that vaccines protect against Delta Plus the same way they have against the Delta variant," Knezevic said.
