Patriarch Porfirije (BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV/MO)

Serbian Orthodox Church Patriarch Porfirije has stated in his Easter message that he is praying to God for peace to be established in Ukraine as soon as possible and unconditionally, adding that war is the defeat of every man.

“Every war, anywhere and anytime, produces only losers and is a defeat of human dignity, a defeat and disgrace of every man as an image of God,” the patriarch stated on April 24, on the occasion of Easter celebrated according to the Julian calendar.

He pointed out that “the flame of armed clashes in Ukraine has joined [the flames in] other places on our planet where conflicts between states, peoples and religions are in progress.”

“We sympathize and suffer with all Orthodox Christians, brothers and sisters, we sympathize and suffer with all people of this world watching how the clashes in the Ukrainian territory and throughout the universe deepen,” the patriarch said.

A part of his message was dedicated to the Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija to whom he said that “their Mother Church will always be with them, as before.” He added that the Serbian Orthodox Church knows of their temptations and struggles, concluding that Kosovo and Metohija is “a spiritual and national cradle” of Serbia.
