The 13th National Assembly of Serbia was inaugurated on Aug. 1 with all 250 seats verified and the MPs having taken their oaths.

The speaker and deputies are to be elected on Aug. 2. After the oath, some parliamentary groups presented their priorities to the press in the hall of the building.

Vladeta Jankovic, who presided over the sitting as the oldest MP, said that in any country that had not seen fair elections in a decade the legitimacy of the other branches of authority would be questioned.

Jankovic added that Serbia, deprived of fair elections, could not be a happy and respected country, and that fair elections could not happen amid pressure and violence, and while "the whim of one man is above the constitution."

Milenko Jovanov, head of the Aleksandar Vucic - Together We Can Do Anything caucus, called Jankovic's speech "unprecedented abuse" and added that the opposition was more present in working bodies than ever.
