Protesting Farmers Meet with PM Ana Brnabic (BETAPHOTO/AMIR HAMZAGIC)

On Aug. 11, a day after they blocked downtown Novi Sad, protesting farmers met in Belgrade with Prime Minister Ana Brnabic. The meeting was attended by representatives of the STIG Farmers’ Association from Pozarevac and of the Initiative for the Survival of Serbia’s Farmers.

The protesters are asking for a guaranteed minimal producer’s price for sunflower of EUR700 per metric ton. They have also requested fuel subsidies, free exportation of agricultural products, loan moratoriums and credit freezes, a 15-dinar-per-litre premium for milk and 30 percent subsidy for fertilizer – as well as for the authorities to declare a state of emergency due to the drought.

The farmers, who began rallying in Novi Sad on Aug. 9, have announced that they will expand and radicalize their protest if these demands are not met following their sit-down with the prime minister.

The Novi Sad farmers have been supported by farmers from Raca, who have been blocking the town’s municipal headquarters since the morning of Aug. 11, awaiting the results of the negotiations with Prime Minister Brnabic. The Raca protesters expect to be joined by farmers from neighboring municipalities as well.
