Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told UNMIK head Caroline Ziadeh on Jan. 16 that continued involvement of the U.N. Mission in Kosovo was necessary, primarily because of entrenched instability that produced numerous incidents.

Meeting with Ziadeh in Belgrade, Vucic said continued consideration of the issue of Kosovo and Metohija in the U.N. Security Council was essential to Serbia, principally so the international community could be transparently informed about the situation on the ground, the Serbian president's office said in a press release.

Vucic said Serbia "has consistently and continually been advocating observance of the principles of international law and the enforcement of the legally binding" Resolution 1244 of the U.N. Security Council, the document that established UNMIK, too, the statement noted.

Ziadeh said UNMIK followed the U.N. Charter and Resolution 1244, in line with its mandate, and stood for honoring all international agreements, the press release added.

In talks with Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic, Ziadeh expressed thanks for Serbia's support to the work of UNMIK and praised the "constructive role" of Belgrade in the dialogue with Pristina.

Dacic stressed that Serbia was committed to dialogue as the way to solve all currentissues, but that agreements made should be honored, the Serbian Foreign Ministry said in a press release.
