The BETA News Agency and the Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia have declared open a third contest for awarding the Dragan Janjic journalism award themed on media literacy, named in honor of Dragan Janjic, BETA's late founder and editor-in-chief, it was announced on March 15.

Two prizes will be handed out, each worth a gross RSD160,000. The aim of the contest is to familiarize the broader public with media literacy through a diverse and contemporary multimedia approach. The awards will go to one student of journalism and one professional journalist, based on a written submission.

The submitted pieces may include articles on the importance of media literacy, the relationship between media literacy and artificial intelligence, the interdisciplinarity of media literacy, attitudes in traditional media toward media literacy, the importance of key social factors in improving media literacy, etc. The deadline for applying is April 15, 2024, the announcement said.

Dragan Janjic's journalistic career was distinguished by his constant struggle to professionalize journalism, his insistence on ethical standards and the advancement of the media landscape. His colleagues remember him as a man of principle dedicated to unbiased journalism, which he considered democracy's fourth pillar. He died in Belgrade on Dec. 30, 2020.
