Extraordinary Parliamentary Elections in Serbia, Dec. 17 2023 (BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV)

Serbian parliament speaker Ana Brnabic has scheduled local elections in 66 self-governments across Serbia for June 2.

The vote will take place in the cities and municipalities which did not go to the polls on Dec. 17, 2023.

Speaking to MPs in the parliament, Brnabic said that the decision to hold local elections on June 2, in parallel with the Belgrade vote, was a result of “a successful dialogue” and passing of amendments to the Law on local elections by a two-thirds parliamentary majority.

“I am happy that the parliament has sent a message to all our citizens that we, as their elected representatives, are capable of reaching an agreement despite all our differences. This agreement is a triumph of all responsible individuals,” she said.

Brnabic urged politicians to act in a way which ensured “that politics should and must not be a means serving to divide people.”

“Our shared obligation is to ensure that our political system keeps developing in a democratic direction which promotes dialogue, mutual respect and a higher degree of understanding. As the Serbian Assembly speaker, I will keep insisting that the supreme representative body of all citizens continues to honor and promote these values,” Brnabic said, wishing all “success” in the upcoming elections.
