There is no mechanism whereby the European Union could guarantee Serbian citizens the environmental safety of the Jadar Project, i.e. of lithium mining in the Loznica area, one of the founders of the National Environmental Association, Dejan Lekic, said on Aug. 5.
He told the Nova newspaper that only the Republic of Serbia could provide guarantees by applying the highest environmental protection standards.
"Logically, if the state wants those guarantees to be based on EU standards, it would be appropriate for said deficiencies and recommendations from the European Commission report for 2023 to first be eliminated, i.e. implemented," said Lekic.
In his words, that way those guarantees would have the weight and seriousness citizens rightfully expect.
