In the wake of numerous protests spurred by concern over the negative impacts of lithium mining on people’s health and the environment, Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic has begun a dialogue with the public.
At his first discussion, in Mali Zvornik on Aug. 14, Vucic promised that the state will keep the public informed of all issues relating to Project Jadar – i.e. the mining of the Jadar river valley, near Loznica – via expert teams.
A variety of such teams, the president said, will be formed over the next two months.
According to Vucic, the public will not only be presented with information in favor of the project, but neither will unconfirmed catastrophic projections be publicized until all the facts are gathered and analyzed.
“We’ll determine whether or not the soil will be contaminated. If it will be – to a very serious or merely serious degree – [the project] is off,” he promised.
