During French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Belgrade on Aug. 29, Serbia signed a purchase contract for Dassault Rafale multirole fighter jets as well as 11 other cooperation agreements pertaining to the energy industry and mining, environmental protection, agriculture, healthcare, tourism and culture.

The purchase contract envisions the acquisition of 12 Rafale jets, worth EUR2.7 billion, and is the first such deal Serbia has made with a Western country.

During a press conference he and Vucic held in the evening of Aug. 29, Macron stated that Serbia’s place is within the European Union and that the EU needs a strong Serbia.

On Aug. 30, the second and final day of Macron’s visit, he and Vucic will visit Novi Sad’s Matica Srpska Gallery, where they will be the first to view a new permanent exhibition on 18th- to 20th-century Serbian national art. After that, the French head of state will deliver a speech at a forum on artificial intelligence.

Macron will wrap up his visit by unveiling a plaque marking the newly-finished modernization of Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Airport, whose concessionaire is the French company VINCI.
