Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated on Sept. 11 that relations between Serbia and Israel were very good and that he was proud that there had been no displays of anti-Semitism in Belgrade and Serbia.
During a joint news conference with President of Israel Isaac Herzog, Vucic said that the Serb people were always “on the side” of the Jewish people. “It is in difficult times that you see what your relations with someone are like. The Serb people have always stood with the Jewish people, both during the hardest years of World War II and before that war, and presently, when it is not at all simple,” Vucic said, adding that he was proud of the Jewish community feeling “good and safe” in Serbia.
“I am also proud that we were able to be a second home for the cultural workers and athletes from Israel, in moments which are not easy for your country,” the Serbian president stated. He also said that it was “exceptionally important” for Serbia to sign a free trade agreement with Israel.
Vucic added that he and the president of Israel discussed the development of cooperation in science and technology, the food sector and cyber-security. Vucic also said that he informed Herzog about the events in Kosovo and Metohija and the need for respecting international law and the U.N. Charter, and thanked him for Israel not voting for the resolution on the Srebrenica genocide in the U.N. General Assembly.
