Serbian Minister of Education Slavica Djukic Dejanovic called on Oct. 3 on representatives of educational unions to continue the dialogue that had begun on higher salaries in the next calendar year.

Dejanovic told RTS that the Serbian Cabinet understood the fact that educational workers had been degraded financially for decades.

"When education is mentioned, there is no question that 50 percent should go to increasing [the salaries of] educational workers compared to all of the rest who will see an increase of eight percent in January," Djukic Dejanovic said and added that a proposed 12 percent salary hike for educational workers was financially feasible.

"We say that at this time the increase in January cannot be higher, because there is no money," Dejanovic said adding that on Oct. 2 48 percent of schools across Serbia worked normally, 29 percent held shortened classes and 23 percent suspended classes.
