Protest in Novi Sad, March 7 2025 (BETAPHOTO/Dragan Gojić,)
An estimated 20,000 people took part in a six-hour protest march through the streets of Novi Sad on March 7, the day of a general strike called by protesting students and left with the message "See you in Belgrade on March 15."
Protesters began gathering in Novi Sad around 9 a.m., when medical students and pupils of the Nursing High School started off toward the university campus, where they were joined by other students followed by a protest march. Scores of citizens joined them along the way.
The protesters carried Serbian flags and blew whistles and horns. They also carried signs reading "Teachers," "Freedom smells like tulips," "Closer to prison than to the people," and caricatures of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, outgoing Prime Minister Milos Vucevic, Speaker Ana Brnabic and other senior state officials.
Similar rallies took place in Belgrade, Nis and other cities as well. All of the demonstrations included a 15-minute tribute to the victims of the Novi Sad railway station accident.
